Britain's heaviest woman dies in hospital

Added on 27/07/10

Measuring tape

‘Britain’s heaviest woman’, Sharon Mevsimler sadly passed away on Saturday after a long battle with severe weight gain. The mother of four reportedly suffered a heart attack as a result of her continued binge eating, even after receiving a gastric band.

It was reported earlier this month that the 41 year old had been told by doctors to shed some weight before being able to qualify for the surgery. However, in her last reported interview, Mrs Mevsimler complained about the surgery. She told a reporter that she hated her life and “thought surgery was the easiest way to lose weight fast”. However, after receiving the treatment she admitted that she should have “taken the diet route instead of surgery”.

Tragic

Mrs Mevsimler’s story is tragic; she actually didn’t suffer from any weight issues in her early life at weight 8st when she got married in her early 20s. However, as a result of suffering from post-natal depression, the mum began to binge eat a problem that she would suffer from for the rest of her life. Her reliance on fast food became so severe that in 2005 she was given 24 hour medical attention. In fact, Mrs Mevsimler was given a couple of months to live by medical experts in 2007 after her weight grew to 42st.

Junk food

Newspapers have reported that even after her £30,000 operation, Mrs Mevsimler still persuaded her family to smuggle junk food in to her hospital room. Her husband Bulent, a former chef who had quit his job to take care of his wife, reportedly smuggled in meals such as fish & chips, and fried chicken despite warning from doctors.

A NHS source told The Sun “there is only so much the Health Service can do for someone with this kind of problem. In the past she begged the NHS for help”. The source added “This woman was only 40. But she literally ate herself into an early grave”. Mrs Mevsimler’s death comes in the same month as the tragic death of Briton’s heaviest man, 48 year old David Hone.
