A new study has revealed how maintaining healthy hydration levels can help us to achieve a healthy weight. So what is this new found secret to dietary success? Simple, a few glasses of water. American scientists have discovered that H2o may have a big part to play in potential weight loss. The experts presented their work at the National Meeting of the American Chemical Society in Boston. The study team used 48 subjects, who were all aged between 55 and 75. The participants of the study were split in to 2 groups and monitored over a 12 week period. All of the subjects were placed on a low calorie diet. However, the second group were asked to drink just two glasses of water before every meal. During the 12 week period the group who drank water lost on average, 5lbs more than the group who weren’t drinking water. The theory behind the improved weight loss is simple. Drinking water, which has no calories, can help to fill us up without adding unhealthy content to our diets. “Simple” “People should drink more water and less sugary, high-calorie drinks. It's a simple way to facilitate weight management”, said senior author of the study, from Virginia Tech, Professor Brenda Davy. Whilst this simple tip is a fantastic way for us all to aid our weight loss, it is important to remember not to overdo it. Drinking a vast amount of water in a very short time can often have damaging effects. In balanced quantities though, the liquid is fantastic for us. There are other fantastic benefits of drinking water. It can help your skin look younger and is also a brilliant aid for all of us who are trying to exercise. “Water – even lowly tap water – is the healthiest drink to go with any meal” advises Tam Fry of the National Obesity Forum. |
